This project was submitted for the 2022 D&AD New Blood Awards. The project brief, given by Google and HMCT, required the creation of a typographically-led campaign based on one of the articles on the UNHDR, which outlines the basic human rights entitled to every individual.
I chose to address the issue of 'Marital Rape' and how it is handled by society and the judicial system. In India, apart from the discriminatory law, the societal and cultural perceptions regarding a woman's role within the family system greatly influence the way a married woman's claim of sexual assault is perceived and dealt with. The current judicial system, governed by the archaic British-era law Section 375, stipulates that any woman over the age of 15 cannot accuse her husband of sexual violence.
Given the law and society's inclination to protect men's rights and the prevailing belief in the sanctity of marriage, married women who experience such abuse often find themselves powerless, facing obstacles at every stage of seeking justice. This challenge becomes even more pronounced in rural areas. Consequently, there is an urgent need to reassess and restructure our judicial and societal systems to prevent unchecked crimes.
